The essential information about Knockout European football
Knockout European football is back on our agenda as we head into the second leg of our Champions League last-16 clash against PSV Eindhoven, who have been a familiar foe across recent decades, and especially in the past three campaigns.
However, we have everything you need to know about our opponents if you are unfamiliar with their history or just want to know how they've been doing this season: The history
PSV celebrate winning the European Cup in 1988
PSV, one of the biggest clubs in the Netherlands, has won 25 league titles, the European Cup (1987–1988), and the UEFA Cup (1977–1988). They have appeared in Europe in every season since 1975/76, meaning this will be their 51st straight campaign doing so.
PSV was founded in 1913 for the employees of the nearby Philips electronics factory. Thirteen years later, they moved up to the top division, where they have remained ever since. In 1929, the team won its first league title, but it didn't win any more until the middle of the 1970s, when manager Kees Rijvers led his team to three league titles, including a Double, and the UEFA Cup, all in four seasons. In the latter part of the 1980s, when Guus Hiddink was in charge, they had better times. In 1988, they beat Benfica to complete a triple by winning the European Cup. This was one of six league titles that the legendary manager won in two seasons. Bobby Robson maintained the team's success into the 1990s, but Philip Cocu led them through their final golden era, when they won three out of four championships from 2015 to 2018. The ballpark Philips Stadion
The Philips Stadion, which has 36,500 seats and is the third-largest football stadium in the nation, is where PSV plays. The ground has been there since 1910, and its most recent major construction was finished in 2002. It has hosted numerous Dutch national team matches, as well as three matches at Euro 2000 including England’s 3-2 defeat to Portugal. It was also the venue for the 2006 UEFA Cup final when Middlesbrough were beaten 4-0 by Sevilla, and the 2022/23 Women's Champions League final.
Season before In 2023/24, PSV wins the Eredivise title. PSV won the league for the first time in six years in spectacular fashion. Their streak of 17 consecutive victories, which set a new record, lasted until March, when they lost only in league to NEC Breda. They finished eight points ahead of holders Feyenoord to win their 25th title, but that was their only setback. The Rotterdam club were also beaten in the season-opening Johan Cruyff Shield, but they did gain revenge by dumping PSV out of the Dutch Cup in the round of 16.
On the way to the league title, 111 goals were scored, with veteran striker Luuk de Jong scoring 29 of them to share the Golden Boot. He hit 36 in all competitions to earn the league's Player of the Year honours, while young Belgian international winger Johan Bakayoko was named Talent of the Year after bagging 14.
They were paired with Borussia Dortmund in the last-16 after finishing second behind us in the Champions League group stages. However, despite holding the German club to a 1-1 draw in Eindhoven, their hopes were dashed when they lost 2-0 in Germany. The supervisor John Bosz Peter Bosz replaced Ruud van Nistelrooy in the PSV hotseat in the summer of 2023, who notably represented Waalwijk and Feyenoord during his playing days. His first major managerial success came in 2005 when he led Heracles to the Eredivise. In his one season in Amsterdam, he also led Ajax to the Europa League final in 2016. He opted to move to Borussia Dortmund after that, but was sacked after six months. After that, he worked as a pitchman for Bayer Leverkusen, where he raised a young Kai Havertz and led them into the 2019 Champions League. He returned to Dutch football after an 18-month stint at Lyon and won the first championship of his career in his first season at the Philips Stadion. The squad
PSV Eindhoven's Johan Bakayoko celebrates scoring PSV have managed to retain all the key components of their title-winning squad. Sergino Dest and Malik Tillman, who made an impression while on loan last year, were signed permanently by Barcelona and Bayern Munich, respectively. They also got center back Ryan Flamingo from Sassuolo, right back Rick Karsdorp, a Dutch international, and veteran Croatian winger Ivan Perisic from Roma. Oranje internationals Noa Lang and attacking midfielder Guus Til provide additional goal threat in addition to De Jong and Bakayoko (pictured above). This season, Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari has scored twice, but top scorer Riccardo Pepi will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, and USA teammate Tillman has had surgery on his ankle. Walter Benitez's performances between the posts over the past three seasons in Eindhoven have seen him rewarded with a first Argentina cap last year, while Tyrell Malacia was loaned from Manchester United in January. Former Gunner Lucas Perez was also added to the squad on a free transfer but he hasn't been included in the Champions League squad.
The current season PSV Eindhoven's Luuk de Jong celebrates scoring PSV's campaign once more got off to a perfect start, winning their first ten games to rise to the top of the table. They won five of their next six games, including a 3-0 victory over Feyenoord, to move six points ahead of Ajax heading into the winter break. Their 3-2 loss to Ajax appeared to be a fluke. However, things have been awful ever since. Just two league wins have come from eight games, which have seen home draws against AZ Alkmaar, Willem II and Utrecht plus a loss at PEC Zwoll. They also lost at the Philips Stadion for the first time since November 2022 when Go Ahead Eagles knocked them out of the Dutch Cup, before the same side beat them 3-2 in the league. Ajax built an eight-point lead on that run, but PSV finally won again on Sunday when they beat Heerenveen 2-1. In terms of the Champions League, Bosz led his team to a 14th-place finish with four wins and two draws from eight matches, including a 3-2 victory over Liverpool. They also came back from a 2-0 deficit against Shakhtar Donetsk with three goals in the 87th minute to earn a respectable 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain. After losing 2-1 in the first leg of the last-16 to Juventus, they won the second game 3-1 after extra time. Flamingo scored the decisive goal to defeat the Italians, but Perisic rolled back the years to score in both legs. The previous conferences 01:59
With a vengeance, Arsenal defeated PSV Eindhoven 4-0 in 2023/24 The 11th time we have played PSV, we beat them 7-1 last week, and we have done so in each of the last three seasons. In 2002/03, goals from Gilberto Silva, Freddie Ljungberg and a Thierry Henry brace secured a 4-0 win in Eindhoven, before a 0-0 draw at Highbury in the group stages; the same stage that we faced each other in 2004/05 when an own goal secured us a home win before a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands, when Lauren and Patrick Vieira both received red cards.
In the round of 16 in 2006/07, we were again drawn against one another. After Alex scored in both ends to eliminate us from the competition, PSV won the first leg 1-0 at home before drawing 1-1 at Emirates Stadium. We were paired in the Europa League group stages in 2022/23, but all those games were in the Champions League. We won 1-0 at home thanks to a goal from Granit Xhaka, but a week later, we lost 2-0 to Eindhoven thanks to goals from Joey Veerman and De Jong. Last season saw us mark our return to the Champions League in style with a 4-0 thrashing of the Dutch giants on matchday one when Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard all found the net, while we drew 1-1 out in Eindhoven when Eddie Nketiah’s opener was cancelled out by Yorbe Vertessen.
